3 Classroom Moves that Defuse Disruptions in 90 Seconds!

When a ninth-grader slams a locker or a fourth-grader refuses to sit, the first 90 seconds decide whether the incident spirals or settles. Here are three science-backed moves you can train for today:

Micro-Goal Redirect – Offer a choice that converts energy to purpose (“Do you want to hand out supplies or cue the slide deck?”). This re-engages the prefrontal cortex and preserves dignity.

Root-Cause Check-In – Ask the student to name (not defend) the feeling behind the behavior. If you can help them surface an emotion, the emotion can therefore release its charge. Pair the prompt “Label the feeling, not the fault” with a calm-tone script.

90-Second Breath Cycle – Neuroscience shows cortisol spikes crash after a focused 90-second diaphragmatic breath. Lead the class through one cycle so no student is singled out.
